Turbidity Curtains for Disney World

The Challenge

When construction happens next to water, sediment control isn't optional. It's the thing standing between the project and a compliance shutdown. In 2017, BMP Supplies partnered with Ferguson Waterworks to manufacture and deliver a fully customized turbidity curtain for construction taking place at Disney World in Florida. Here's how it went.

The Requirements

Three hard constraints shaped the entire build:

  1. Green: no exceptions. Disney mandated a green curtain so the barrier wouldn't obstruct the aesthetics of the park. Standard black or orange curtain wouldn't cut it. The color had to be built into the custom run.

  2. 15,000 lineal feet. That's the length of curtain required to meet the barrier specifications for the site. A big custom order by any measure.

  3. 3 weeks. That was the manufacturing window, and BMP hit it. The full custom curtain was manufactured and delivered inside the three-week timeframe.

The Results

Construction stayed on track. The curtains kept dirty runoff from the construction fully contained, which kept the project compliant and the deadlines intact. When sediment control works, nobody thinks about it. And that's the point.

The lake stayed protected. The curtains were completely effective at controlling silt and sediment in the exposed lake at Disney. The barrier did exactly what a turbidity curtain is supposed to do: enclose the work area so suspended sediment settles inside instead of drifting into open water.

The weather didn't win. During a severe storm, the curtains remained unharmed and intact. Strong winds and high currents had little to no effect on their stability. That is the real-world test no spec sheet can fully capture.

The Takeaway

Custom doesn't have to mean slow. A 15,000-foot, color-matched, fully customized curtain. Manufactured and delivered in three weeks, then proven through a severe storm next to one of the most scrutinized bodies of water in the country.
