Modular Turbidity Curtain

Turbidity curtains are designed to control the settling of solids (silt) suspended in water by providing a controlled area of containment. This condition of suspension (turbidity) is usually created by disrupting natural conditions through shoreline construction or dredging in a marine environment. In essence, a turbidity curtain is a floating silt fence. The containment of settle-able solids is desirable to reduce the impact area of these solids.

Before the introduction of the BMP Modular Turbidity Curtain, these floating barriers were custom made with a predetermined length, skirt height, and other variables. They were virtually impossible to re-use; being specifically manufactured for one site, and the large size making cleaning, re-packaging and storage difficult and unlikely to occur. BMP has invented a re-usable, modular system that assembles in minutes for site specific applications, then fully disassembles for removal, cleaning, and storage.

The system contains three parts: the floatation, the middle skirt(s), and the bottom weighted skirt:

The floatation units are made of orange, PVC coated fabric around a 5” polystyrene
core (5.5 lbs/ft buoyancy), with 4” hook and loop connection.

Grommets with rings allow for a 7.5 m cable line connection included with each 5 float section. The units are sold in packages of 5 that when connected total 7.5 meters in length.

A middle skirt is used if the application requires a height of over 1.22 meters. Sewn with hook and loop connection, one skirt attaches to 5 floatation units. Several middle skirts can be used to give overall curtain heights of 8, 12 or 16 feet.

A bottom weighted skirt is the same as a middle skirt except it has a 5/16” plated chain sewn into a flap as a ballast. A bottom weighted skirt is always used.
